Minden

Minden, Nevada

The charming community of Minden is a quiet, tidy Nevada town set in the heart of the stunning Carson Valley. Originally founded as a planned community, Minden is in fact unique among Silver State towns and possibly even the nation, as it was mapped and defined on the ground before a single building was even constructed.

Minden was originally established by the Dangberg family and named after a city near the patriarch’s birthplace in Germany, and although newer subdivisions have affected the town’s symmetry, charm and pride are still evident. Visitors perusing historic downtown Minden today will pass stately century-old homes and historic brick buildings designed by noted, Nevada architect Frederick Delongchamps. There’s a nice selection of local restaurants, and impressive array of antique stores and galleries to peruse. Be sure to pick up a walking tour brochure at the town office, located at the CVIC Hall.

Minden Park, located in the heart of the downtown area, is a lovely spot for a picnic lunch and is home to the bandstand/gazebo that hosts monthly concerts during the summer months. The scenery around town is picturesque to say the least, with the majestic Job’s Peak, possibly the most photographed mountain in the entire Carson range of the Sierra Nevada, which is visible from nearly vantage point in the valley.

In town, there are annual street fairs hosted throughout the year, with local and traveling artists, a range of interesting local vendors, food booths and live music. Summer months mean farmers’ markets, and there’s the annual lighting of the historic Minden Gazebo to kick off the holiday season.

Minden also serves as an ideal launching pad for an unimaginably broad array of outdoor recreation. Not only is it close to the unmatched Lake Tahoe, but also there is no shortage of golf, biking and hiking the area. Four of the Divine Nine golf courses are just minutes away from Minden, and hikers and horseback riders can follow the Faye-Luther Canyon Trail that begins just off State Route 206. Also, cyclists and motorcycle enthusiasts alike can also enjoy the spectacularly scenic and sweeping bends of Foothill Jacks Valley Road, not far from downtown Minden. After a day of outdoor activity, you can relax at the Carson Valley Inn, have dinner at Barone and Reed, or choose from a number of fantastic American Asian, Mexican and Italian dining options.
