Cooking gets competitive at Nevada’s Cathedral Gorge State Park, where a Dutch oven cook-off will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 27.

Dutch ovens —thick-walled cooking pots with lids placed on hot coals — are used to make all types of meals, and the cook-off will award prizes in four categories: best bread, best dessert, best main course and best vegetable side dish.

Individuals and teams can enter the competition; there’s a $5 fee for each dish entered, and unlimited entries are allowed. Park entry fee is $7 per vehicle (cash or check only); Nevada residents get a $2 discount.

Cathedral Gorge, about 165 miles northeast of Las Vegas, is known for its dramatic canyons, cave-like formations and cathedral-like spires. Popular with photographers, Cathedral Gorge’s unusual topography is the result of geologic processes occurring over tens of millions of years. It’s near the town of Panaca.
